Deo Gratias

???????????????????????????????????????

Deo Gratias is Latin for “Thanks be to God.” Remembering to give thanks for all of our blessings, big and small, helps us to find God in our everyday moments and gives us an attitude of gratitude! Colleen at Thoughts on Grace has organized this meme and you can contribute by clicking here. This week I’m thankful for:

  • The lovely mass I attended at Northwestern University. What a great community! The priest’s words were so thoughtful.
  • Pope Francis’ book The Joy of the Gospel, which I just finished reading. There’s something for everyone. So inspiring and practical.
  • My friend Kasia. I’ve known her since high school and we rarely can get together. We had a nice, long lunch this week.
  • My friend Kevin. I worked with him years ago and we’ve stayed friends. We have different political views but can discuss issues civilly. Also, he finds all these interesting places to visit and books to read. I always come home enriched with a long list of things to do.
  • For this long vacation, which has given me time to visit my aunt while she’s in rehab about 6 days a week. I know it can get boring in these places.
  • One more – for the film Forbidden Games. It’s set in WWII and shows how children coped with the war. The child actors were so natural. A simple and stunning film.

  1. We found my aunt who may have had a heart attack and got her to the hospital. Not sure what happened, but she hadn’t answered the phone for a few days and was lying on her bedroom floor for a long time. (She doesn’t know or doesn’t want to say how long.)
  2. That my aunt’s getting good healthcare.
  3. For my friend Kristyn who came to visit the last 2 and a half days.
  4. For my friends Tundi and Kristi who are so wise and have already had to handle aging parents so they can understand and offer the wisdom needed.
  5. That it warmed up a bit today and we had sun.

  1. Easter and the Resurrection! Without this we’d be lost. Forever lost. We tend to forget that, but Easter mass reminds us. I was lucky to get to go to my little Chinese church for Easter mass. Such color and joy!
  2. Easter brunch. Now this is far, far lesser than the Resurrection, but I did enjoy the conversation and food at brunch.
  3. The article below by Barbara Nicolosi on art and the church. It really made me think. We can do much better along these lines. We must.
  4. Shakespeare. It was his birthday on the 23rd. I’m reading Cymbeline, which I confess I never even heard of before. It’s a challenging, though lively read.
  5. My friend Kimberley. I just got an email from her. She’s got an amazing wisdom and outlook.

  1. Time. We’ve had Monday – Wednesday off and so I’ve had extra time to catch up and do things at a slower pace. Life is so pleasant when you don’t have to rush.
  2. The warmer weather. Ah, it’s in the mid 70s, the ideal temperature in my book.
  3. A delightful day out with Eva. Though we were misled as to where the Botanical Gardens were and how to get there, we found a different garden and had a lovely day. Not the day we planned, but a good one nonetheless.
  4. That I wrote 75 pages for the April writing challenge, my friend Sandra set up. I hoped to get 100 done, but this is 75 more pages than I wrote in March.
  5. My friend Kimberley whose birthday is in just a few days. She’s remarkably smart, kind and wise.

A Thankful Woman’s Book of Blessings

On Wednesdays, Judy, creator of an inspiring blog, A Thankful Woman’s Book of Blessings encouraged participants to list their blessings, to give thanks for the five things in the past week and then link to her blog. Judy has since stopped blogging, but giving thanks is a good spiritual practice so I’ll continue

This week I am thankful for:

  1. The beautiful snow we got on Christmas and on the 25th, just enough to make everything pretty, but not make driving hazardous.
  2. The documentary film Ai Wei Wei: Never Sorry. It’s a bracing film about an artist who sicks his neck out to make China more transparent and democratic.
  3. Christmas cookies. We still have loads and I’m glad God gave me some discipline so I’m not gobbling them all up.
  4. The afternoon tea I got to enjoy with my friend Theresa who’s in from out of town and Sheila. Tea is so civilized.
  5. All the men and women, police, military, firefighters, who sacrifice so that we’re safe.

This week I am thankful for:

  1. Finding a hotel that’s having a turkey dinner here in Jinan.
  2. Getting my iPad fixed so I can finish reading The Hobbit for my book club. I know that sounds like a rather privileged thank you, but it’s hard to bring lots of books here given luggage restrictions. I love that if I persevere I can find my problem posted somewhere on the internet and some good soul has taken the time to write a solution.
  3. A lovely walk with my friends on Sunday. We enjoyed the warm colors and temperatures of the day.
  4. That my contract’s been renewed so I have a job in the spring.
  5. For the love I feel that comes from God.
